Radiohead Live Review 04-01-2017
So, here I am. Metal head gone country at a Radiohead show. Nope, they’re not metal. They ain’t country either.
The last time I saw them I was on a date with my wife. I don’t remember much about the show. I was more focused on my date. At that time, I was in a metal band called Delusional Mind. I’ve always had a somewhat open mind to all music, but I had yet to let Radiohead in. The only song I was familiar with was “Creep.”
My wife’s influence on me in music has led to some wonderful discoveries. In fact, while I wrote this live review for Teacherofguitar, she was right by my side writing a live review for the AJC. You can read her review here.
There were a lot of guitars used at the show. Telecasters, Stratocasters, Gretsch, an acoustic, a classical, and a Rickenbacker. At several points, guitarist Jonny Greenwood turned his guitar upright and played it like a cello with a bow
I can’t even begin to say all the types of keyboards that were used. An upright piano was brought out during “All I Need” for Thom Yorke to play. I wouldn’t guess that it was a real upright. As far as I know, an acoustic piano goes out of tune when moved or exposed to variable temperatures. I don’t guess they keep a piano tuner on tour with them. I would think that it’s an electric keyboard disguised as an upright.
They had two drummers playing all night, but a third drum set was brought for Jonny Greenwood to play. I wonder why this ever came about.
Did Greenwood just like the beat on this particular song. Was he late to rehearsal too often and was being punished? Did he never get around to writing his part for the song?
Everyone seem to have monitors on the stage and in-ear monitors. I’m not sure why they would need both.
The light show definitely added a nice dynamic to the show. When a song would become loud and aggressive, the lights helped visually represent it.
My favorite part was when the stage went all red.
Radiohead covered many mini genres of their musical style of choice. From grunge, new age, to electric dance music. I believe they played something for everyone that night.
